This afternoon we will depart from O’Hare airport to begin our journey to Scandinavia. Meals and beverages will be served as appropriate during our overnight flight on KLM airlines.

Tuesday, September 24 - Arrive Bergen: After changing planes in Amsterdam, we will arrive in Bergen early this afternoon. Here we will meet the tour manager who will accompany us until our departure from Stockholm. As we transfer by private motorcoach to our Bergen hotel, our tour manager will share information about our tour and details about today’s schedule. Dinner and overnight in Bergen. Welcome to Norway! Wednesday, September 25 - Bergen: This ancient Hanseatic port has been trading with the known world for 1000 years and that legacy can be seen in the colorful remains of the merchants’ warehouses along the docks in the oldest part of the city at Bryggen. Our morning city tour will include this atmospheric quarter and the lively Fish Market, which is still a living reminder of Bergen’s ancient trading history; we will see Haakon’s Hall, the banqueting and ceremonial hall of the old Royal residence, when Bergen was the capital of Norway. The remainder of the afternoon will be free to continue exploring the City of Seven Mountains - perhaps take a funicular train up Mount Floyen, visit Troldhaugen, the home of Edvard Grieg or just sit in a sidewalk cafe and watch the world go by. Thursday, September 26 - Bergen / Stalheim / Sognefjord Cruise / Flam: Today will be a day full of highlights as we experience the quintessential scenery of Norway, dominated by fast flowing rivers, glittering fjords, thundering waterfalls and snow-capped mountain peaks. We will drive through the Naerdal Canyon to Stalheim, for some of the most spectacular panoramic views in all of Norway. The breathtaking vistas continue as we cruise the Naeroyfjord and Sognefjord to Flam. In the late afternoon we will arrive in Flam for dinner and overnight. (B, D) Hotel Flammsbrygga (or similar)

Friday, September 27 - Flam / Borgund / Lillehammer: This morning we depart Flam and the fjords to journey through green valleys and past snow-capped mountain peaks. We will pause along the way to absorb the spectacular scenery and landscapes and to visit the medieval Borgund Stave Church. A stave church is a medieval wooden Christian church building once common in north-western Europe.In the afternoon we continue to the famous ski resort of Lillehammer, where the Winter Olympics were held in 1994, for dinner and overnight. Saturday, September 28 - Lillehammer: Today’s sightseeing will include the open-air Maihaugen Museum, where our local guide will bring to life the traditions of the Gudbrandsdal through its farmhouses, workshops, tools and utensils. We will see the ancient Garmo Stave Church, as well as reminders of more recent history in the Olympic ski jumping arena and Olympic Park. Sunday, September 29 - Lillehammer / Oslo: This morning we will depart Lillehammer to drive to Oslo. On arrival in the early afternoon
we will begin our encounter with the Scandinavian thirst for adventure, by visiting the Kon Tiki Museum with the original balsawood raft on which Thor Heyerdahl  crossed the Pacific and the papyrus boat Ra II, which he built to cross the Atlantic. Monday, September 30 - Oslo: After breakfast we will continue to explore Oslo and the treasures of its museums. During our city tour we will pass the Royal Palace, the Storting, home of the Norwegian Parliament, and the City Hall where the Nobel Peace Prize is presented each year. We will walk through the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the largest collection of sculptures in the world by one artist.Our tour will also include the Viking Ship Museum, which bears further witness to the Scandinavian spirit of adventure, that already 1000 years ago spread its influence as far afield as Sicily, Normandy, Greenland and Newfoundland. Tuesday, October 1 - Oslo / Dalarna Region: This morning we will depart Oslo and drive to the border between Norway and Sweden. Today’s journey will take us through scenery so typical for Sweden - through dark green forests and fertile valleys. After passing glittering Lake Siljan, Sweden’s sixth largest lake, we reach the historical province region of Dalarna, famous for its fertile green valleys, traditional costumes and culture. Wednesday, October 2 - Dalarna Region / Uppsala / Stockholm: This afternoon we will drive to Uppsala, cradle of Swedish Christianity and the Swedish Kingdom. Our city tour will show us all the landmarks of the city, including the Uppsala Cathedral  built around 1270, and the University, both the oldest in Sweden. There will be free time for lunch, before we continue to the Swedish capital of Stockholm for our overnight.(B) Hotel Freys (or similar)

Thursday, October 3 - Stockholm: After breakfast we will enjoy a sightseeing tour of Sweden’s capital city, which will include all its iconic highlights. Sometimes called the Venice of the North, Stockholm is truly wedded with the sea, built across 14 islands and the mainland, at the point where Lake Mälaren flows out to the Baltic Sea. We will see the City Hall, where the Nobel Prize banquets are held, the Stockholm Royal Palace, one of the largest palaces in Europe! The Palace was largely built during the eighteenth century in the Italian Baroque style, and is now the official residence and office of King Carl Gustaf.  We will see the Old Town with its original medieval street plan and the Storkykran Cathedral, venue for Royal coronations, weddings and funerals. The afternoon is free to enjoy additional activities - perhaps visit the Vasa Museum, the salvaged warship which sank on her maiden voyage in 1628 or the Skansen Park, oldest open-air museum in the world, which showcases the whole of Sweden, its history, culture and traditions. This evening we will enjoy our farewell dinner and share our memories and photos before retiring a “wee” bit earlier. (B, D) Hotel Freys (or similar)

Friday, October 4 - Stockholm / Chicago: The good thing about an  early departure means we get back to Chicago a little earlier in the afternoon. Early this morning we will transfer to the Stockholm Airport to begin our journey home. After changing planes in Amsterdam, we’ll arrive in Chicago mid-afternoon today. Welcome Home!
